A couple of months ago, my mother challenged my sisters and I to make quilt blocks inspired by a challenge featured in the Indianapolis Star back in 1984 called the Indiana Seasons Quilt Contest.
We've added our own twist to the challenge: we're only using fabric scraps we already have on hand from other projects. No buying new fabric! We've even been swapping scraps with each other to find just the right fabrics for our blocks. It's been fun seeing what we can create with what we already have and sharing our stashes along the way.
The Wild Lily Quilt Block was a new learning experience for me because, while I sew curves in garments all the time, I haven't done a lot of curved piecing in quilting. Working with curves in quilt blocks is a little different than working with them in garment sewing, so this was a fun opportunity to try something outside of my usual sewing projects.
Is it perfect? Nope! There are definitely things I could improve on, but that's part of the learning process. Each project teaches me something, and this one gave me a little more experience working with curves.
I'm calling this one an accomplishment, and I'm happy with that!
After all, we don't learn new techniques by sticking with what we already know. Sometimes you just have to give it a try, embrace the imperfections, and enjoy the process.
I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone's blocks turn out and what we all come up with using our fabric scraps!
Have you ever taken on a project using only what you have on hand or tried a technique that pushed you outside your comfort zone? I'd love to hear what you've created and what you have learned!
